A planet full of angry revived Brutes allied with a time-altering race would be a terrifying threat indeed. Since the Banished homeworld was destroyed by Cortana, they may want to wind the clock back and restore it. This would certainly make the Endless a deadly foe, and it could also explain why the Banished are so willing to cooperate with them. One popular theory is tied to Chief being transported three days into the future after confronting the Harbinger, which suggests the Endless may have some measure of control over time. Even though Master Chief ultimately defeated her, the final cutscene reveals that Atriox (leader of the Banished) succeeded in releasing this new threat.īesides their immunity to the Halos, it isn’t entirely clear what makes the Xalanyn so dangerous.

That changed with the events of Infinite, where the Harbinger was released by the Banished and attempted to free them. While most of the cylixes were opened to begin reintroducing life to the galaxy, the Endless remained imprisoned on Zeta Halo. Deemed too dangerous to ignore, the Endless were imprisoned within cylixes, the same genetic repositories used to preserve other species wiped out by the Halos. This new species would come to be known as the Endless because of their immunity to the Halo array. Another of Infinite’s audio logs reveals that the monitor of Zeta Halo, Despondent Pyre, discovered the Xalanyn, which were still alive despite the devastation wrought across the stars. Enter the Halo rings, an array of super weapons that release devastating pulses of radiation meant to destroy every living being in the galaxy and eliminate the Flood’s food source. Even a single remaining Flood spore could spread the infection anew, leaving the Forerunners with only one option: to starve the Flood out. The discovery of the Flood kicked off a war that the Forerunners had no chance of winning. In the Halo universe’s distant past, the galaxy was ruled by a race known as the Forerunners. One log even claims that the Endless are a bigger threat than the Flood, but players are given little indication as to how this might be the case.ĭespite being labeled a spiritual reboot, Infinite’s campaign leans heavily on past narratives. The Endless are left shrouded in mystery for most of the campaign, with players gleaning only snippets of information from the Harbinger - who is either a member of the species or some kind of representative - as well from various audio logs sprinkled throughout Zeta Halo. Halo Infinite had the impossible task of raising those stakes and did so by introducing a new enemy race to the franchise: the Endless. The Flood was the ultimate threat, so dangerous that it necessitated the use of the Halo rings, designed to wipe out all life in the galaxy.
